Kirsti Brown

Kirsti Hannah Brown has been working in ceramics for almost twenty five years. She studied at Crewe and Alsager College (Manchester Metropolitan University) and obtained a BA( Hons ) in Contemporary Crafts before setting up her first studio in Chester in 1996. Kirsti now works from her home studio Hawarden, North Wales and is a member of The Maker’s Guild of Wales. Her work can be seen in galleries across the UK from the Isles of Scilly to Shetland and in private collections abroad.

The ceramics I make derive their inspiration from the westerly coastal regions of Wales and Scotland. The process begins with sketches of the sea and cliff formations as well as stones and pebbles from the beaches visited. Ideas are developed back in the studio through drawing and experimenting with various clays and slips.

All the work is hand-built using slab building, coiling and pinching techniques. I fire to stoneware temperature using my signature glaze, a dry turquoise. I vary the application of glaze, colour of clay and background colour to produce a variety of effects that create a sense of the sea and shoreline.
