Gareth Tristan Evans
Gareth is a multi-media artist. Welsh by birth now residing in the north of England. Self-taught, Gareth’s artworks combine traditional techniques such as brush and pencil with photography and digital manipulation as well as paper craft and embellishments. Often a vintage and nostalgic feel is present in his work that merges with modern techniques that regularly includes 3D elements.
His current series are ‘My Father’s Books’ and ‘Geisha’.
‘My Father's Books’ is a series of artworks that celebrate his dad's classic literary collection. Trevor was an English teacher and an avid collector of literature. Books surrounded Gareth throughout his childhood, and he has attempted to capture the atmosphere and wonder of the collection through the concept ‘My Father’s Books’ and creation of the literary swallowtail butterfly.
Each hand-crafted butterfly - a classic book cover - carry the signs of decades of use with worn edges, sun bleached colours and the odd guilty coffee stain. All these are jealously captured within each butterfly. The butterflies are meticulously detailed in homage to their inspiration. They are snapshot of the subject whether fiction or fact, a fleeting glimpse of the whole story.
The framing of the butterfly collections has been carefully put together to recall insect specimen display cabinets that might appear in natural history museums. Gareth describes the works as a 'labour of love', each one opening a window back into fond memories of a happy childhood.
My Father’s Books has been exhibited in galleries in the north of England as well as in Wales.
